The Story

12-24" tall, 12-24" wide. Whorled Milkweed also called Asclepias verticillata is an upright perennial with stems that have" whorled" needle-like leaves. Native to central and eastern North America this Asclepias likes drier conditions. Flowers bloom June through September in small white clusters. After blooming narrow seed pods open releasing seeds with silky strings distributed by the wind. Pods are also excellent additions to bouquets. Whorled milkweed is an important food source for Monarch Butterflies. The butterflies lay their eggs on the milkweed and the larve (catapillars) feast on the leaves. Once hatched, the butterflies consume the flower nectar for energy. Milkweed is easy to grow, and helps save the Monarchs.

Native Range for Asclepias verticillata (Whorled Milkweed) - AL, AR, AZ, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MT, MS, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, VA, VT, WI, WV, WY.
